Benefits of brass

Brass is a widely used material worldwide and it’s incredibly versatile. 

Brass is one of the easiest metals to machine and it has some great advantages. Brass parts are used in a wide variety of industries, including: Plumbing, Engineering, Appliance, and Electrical. You can usually find brass fittings. Brass is favored because it’s easy machinability reduces production costs, and it provides great corrosion resistance. Brass parts also create tighter seals for fittings. 

Machined brass parts and components are often used when corrosion resistance is a high priority. The higher value of scrap brass also makes machining brass comparable to the price of steel. 

Machining brass parts

Brass is often chosen for a CNC machining project. Brass is a softer metal and low-friction, making it one of the easiest to machine. Brass parts can easily be drilled, machined, and cut, so CNC machines can form complex designs quickly and efficiently.

Grades of brass

Like most metals, there are various grades or alloys of brass that each have slightly different properties. 

Common grades of brass include: C360, C353, C230, C464, and C443. 

Brass is an alloy comprised of copper and zinc and offers a wide range of properties such as high corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, strength, and workability.  It’s considered low friction and non-magnetic alloy and can range in colors from dark red to golden yellow.

360 and 353 Brass are the most commonly used alloys for machined parts. There are other common alloys, but they have a lower machinability rating, so they’re used more for piping and parts that are cold worked rather than CNC machined.  

Brass C360 has the highest machinability of copper alloys, making it the most commonly used brass grades. 360 is slightly cheaper to machine compared to 353 Brass. It’s available at a low cost and provides good corrosion resistance and a polished finish. 

Brass C353 is a free machining alloy that’s ideal for parts with threading or knurling. This alloy has better formability and works well with moving parts and valves. 

Both C353 and C360 brass parts can be annealed, or heat treated. This process makes brass parts more ductile and less brittle.
